Gurtin Municipal Bond Management Becomes Signatory of the UN’s Principles for Responsible Investment
San Diego-based asset manager joins global network of investors furthering research, progress, and leadership in responsible investment
SAN DIEGO (January 29, 2018)—Gurtin Municipal Bond Management (Gurtin), an asset management firm serving high net worth individuals and their investment advisors, recently became a signatory of the United Nations-supported Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI). With this collaboration, Gurtin formally joins the PRI’s independently operated, global network of investors that is working to create a sustainable and economically effective financial system on the foundation of responsible investment.
As a PRI signatory, Gurtin will continue to support research and leadership in responsible investment, taking measures to provide full transparency for investors, such as publicly reporting on the firm’s investment activities in accordance with the PRI’s principles and seeking relevant disclosure regarding environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues by the municipalities in which the firm invests.
Furthermore, this partnership affirms Gurtin and the PRI’s alignment on the importance of employing fundamental ESG risk analysis to help ensure sustainable investment practices that serve clients’ best interests. By incorporating ESG risk analysis into the in-depth research that serves as a core component of Gurtin’s investment philosophy—and thus permeates the bond selection process for portfolios managed across all its municipal investment strategies—the firm aims to identify ESG factors that could pose a risk to a municipal borrower’s ability to repay principal and interest on its bonds. In addition, the firm employs individuals with both policy and economic backgrounds on its research team, allowing for extensive, ongoing surveillance of both ESG and other risk factors.
“We are enthusiastic about joining the PRI’s global network of signatories who are working together to further thought- and action-based progress in responsible investment,” said Michael Johnson, co-CEO and chief risk officer at Gurtin. “The PRI’s mission of fostering an ‘economically efficient, sustainable’ investment model is very closely aligned with our own investment philosophy, and we look forward to the new opportunities for innovation and enhanced measures of accountability this partnership affords us.”
